Niamh, originally from Co. Kerry, qualified with BSc (Hons) in Human Nutrition and Dietetics from TCD & a Diploma in Dietetics from DIT in 1993. This 5-year training with the Dept. of clinical medicine at Trinity College Dublin included a 6 month internship at St James’s Hospital Dublin & Cork University Hospital. In her early career she worked in several teaching hospitals throughout Ireland for 6 years, and also worked with the Irish Universities Nutrition Alliance as a senior research nutritionist for 3 years.
In 1999 she founded Cork Nutrition Consultancy, which was the very first of its kind in Cork, and remains the longest established full-time private nutrition consultancy & dietetic service in the southern region.
Niamh’s special interests include gastroenterology, paediatrics, and EU food legislation. The latter lead her to expand the corporate side of her business in 2012 when she launched and trademarked NutriCount® Ireland, which provides professional nutritional analysis, allergen labelling & mentoring on health and nutrition claims for restaurants and other food businesses.
Niamh has always been an active member of the Irish Nutrition & Dietetic Institute, the professional body for dietitians / clinical nutritionists in Ireland. She advocates for her patients and for her profession, and is a regular contributor to local and national radio, print media & TV on all things nutrition. In 2008 she founded SEDI (Self-Employed Dietitians of Ireland) – a professional network which represents freelance dietitians. She has continued to lead this dynamic group of entrepreneurs for the past 12 years.
As a passionate patient advocate, and seeing first-hand the power of social media in healthcare, she encourages more health professionals to have an online presence and continues to call out those who willfully disseminate false, misleading and dangerous health advice online.
In 2015 she also completed a post grad in Management and Leadership at the Irish Management Institute Dublin.
Niamh is also a busy mum of two, an accomplished pianist (Associate of the Victoria of Music, London), addicted to shoes, partial to chocolate and a glass of Malbec!
